Excess Paperwork - How long to keep?

Does anyone know how long we should keep student's paperwork after the conclusion of the semester? I've still got test sheets from three years ago. Can I dispose of them? I do keep a virtual copy on my computer but want to rid myself of the excess paper. Any thoughts?

So, I guess the rumor is 1 year. We should get an official word on this. We should probably get an update/refresher on the HIPAA Laws or any other laws governing privacy, also. It's real easy to do something that violates these laws.

I think it depends on the department. One that I work in keeps the material until the following year's semester ends. So fall of 2010 material can be disposed of now that fall 2011 is completed. Another department requires we keep them until accreditation is completed every three years.
